Q1 Reflection

My quarter one results were not as good as I hoped them to be, but considering it is my first quarter being a high school student, I am okay with the outcome. On my report card, I got three B's and had a total GPA of 3.6. This may be good by some standards, but I would like to do better next time. I know that high school is harder than middle school, and West Tech is harder than most high schools, but I went here to try my best to succeed and I plan to do so.
There are several areas that could use improvement when it comes to my grades. In quarter one I didn't have any missing homework assignments, but my test grades were lower than I would like them to be. So, if I would like to succeed in quarter 2, I need to study harder for my test and make sure I understand the information. I also need to take more notes and ask if I need help. I would also like to improve my procrastination when it comes to homework assignments. This doesn't exactly affect my grades, but it does affect how quickly I do the assignments, and that might be where I missing some of the information.
Some of the adjustments I need to make for quarter 2 is that I need to study harder, pay more attention in class, do my homework when I have time instead of waiting until the last minute, and taking more notes. All of this will help me accomplish my quarter two goals which it is to get straight A's, straight o's, and perfect attendance. I think I will be able to accomplish my goals if I take more time to better understand the material.

Whole New Mind: Overall Concept Reflection Blog Post

The book a whole new mind by Daniel pink is a book about why right-brainers will rule the future. In the book, he continues to describe different ways and scenarios that right-brainers will take over the workspace. What he means by this, is that right Brainers will work for less money then left Brainers so this automatically makes them a better employee. Because right brains also care about design, not just about quantity, they would be more appealing when someone is hiring.

In the book it talks about different kinds of scenarios and qualities a future employer might be looking for. It also talks about how these qualities are going to be important not only in the workspace but for every day use. Left directed thinking is directed by left brain attributes towards a left brain result, a left couldn't grasp details but only the right hemisphere can see the big picture the left handles logic, sequence, and analysis. It seems that the left is less emotional and more work well the right takes care of empathy expression emotions and the big context. R directed thinking is directed by the right brain attributes towards a right brain result.

It also talks about how Asia produces more R directed thinking then most other places because they are not brought up on money and it is not their main focus like it is for a lot of places. It also is more about design than quantity so they would rather have something pretty than something expensive. The book goes through different ages and what side thinkers were more valuable then. This book taught me a lot about what employers might want in the future it also taught me what they wanted in the past. I thought it was very interesting and a good book.

Chapter 6

Out of the three types of people described in chapter 6, metaphor maker, boundary crosser, and inventor which do you think you would be best at and why?

I think I would be a metaphor maker, because I can easily understand metaphors and I can relate to different metaphors.  I also relate to the quote used in the book, and I understand what it is saying.  I can easily understand things in term of something else.

Chapter 3-4 Reflection

There are several concepts I have learned from last weeks reading, or chapter 3 and chapter 4. Most of them are from chapter 3 and include high concept, high touch. In chapter 3 it also talks about the 18th century through the 21st century, which is when we moved from agriculture age to the industrial age to the information age. This is basically the transition from a Farmer to a machine worker, to a business like man, to somebody that does their own thing and creates new ideas using creativity and differences in culture. Chapter 4 mostly talks about design. The reason Daniel Pink finds designs so important is because if his theories are correct, and right brain to do take over the world, design will then be more important than the value.

Freshman goals

I have a lot of goals for my freshman year. Some of which are social but most are academic. I do hope to make friends but more importantly I hope to get good grades and join lots of fun clubs. Grades are very important throughout high school to make sure I get to a good college, so I would like to make sure that I stay on top of my great and try my hardest. One goal of mine is to get straight A's for the whole year. This is very important to me and I would really like this to happen.

A social goal of mine is not only to join clubs, but to make good friends that all do well in school and will help me succeed in my years to come at WCTA. Now that Q1 report cards are coming soon, I have to make sure I don't let any grades slip. I also have to make sure I'm staying on top of my work and doing everything that I need to to get good grades. To positively impact my grade in all of my classes I could do a lot of things. One of the most important is to try hard and to do my best because if I only give a little of my effort, I will not succeed. I know if I try my best I can positively impact my grades and I really hope to succeed in the first quarter.

Brian D. blog post review

The person's blog I reviewed was Brian Darvey. I found all of his blog post very interesting. I also agreed with most of his points that he made and all of his views. He talks in complete sentences, and doesn't get off task. In his blog, there are always interesting points made that relate to the assignment in a good way. In all, I think his blog post has quality concepts and is nicely done.

My Hero

My personal hero is my mom.  The reason she is my personal hero is because she is a single mother and she is a teacher.  In my opinion, I wouldn't like life very much if I had to go and teach all day, then come home and deal with my two kids.  She has set both my brother and I up for success from the very beginning and has effected my future so much even though it hasn't begun.  I aspire to be like her and hope to be as good of a mom as she is.

How stories have played an important role in my life

Stories have always played a very important role in my life.  Even from when I was little, and didn't know they were.  For an example, the story The Ugly Duckling.  This book taught me that everyone is beautiful in their own way.  This taught me not to judge people from a very young age.  Stories I read today often have an impact on my attitude, or sometimes my opinion on a certain topic.  One of the reasons I like reading so much is because stories make me think .  A lot of books, or stories help me think and make me more creative in some ways and think about things in a new light.

Commencement Speech video- Julia Bell

After viewing the Commencement Speech video, please post a 2 paragraph blog reflection.

In the video, Steve Jobs gave a speech at Standford college.  He talked about how without not going to college he wouldn't be where he is today.  He gave major life advise and basically said "everything happens for a reason".  I think this was the main message of his speech.  He also gave examples about how this saying is true for him.

I mostly disagree with this message but i can see where it would be helpful.  I do agree that you shouldn't do you something you don't want to do.  With the saying "everything happens for a reason" only works for a select few and I don't think people should live by this message.  It might have worked out for him, but it doesn't work out for most.

Cyberbully Fact Sheet and Laws- Julia Bell

In the cyberbully fact sheet, it talked about a lot of things concerning cyberbulling.  They talked about the rules of cyberbulling, what to do if you are cyberbullied.  It also talked about kids who have committed suicide because they were being cyberbullied.  It also gave advise and gave more information on cyberbulling.  It talked about different kinds of cyberbulling and what the most common type is.

I thought this fact sheet was very interesting.  I have known what cyberbulling is for a while, but I never went in depth and found out more about cyberbulling.  I have always known it was an issue, but I have never experienced it first hand, so i cannot completely relate to this article.  I agree that cyberbulling is a serious matter and needs to be taken more seriously.

Cyberbulling Video Blog Reflection- Julia Bell

The cyberbulling video was about a couple different people and their experiences with cyberbulling.  There was two girls and one boy in the video and they all talked about what happened when they were being cyberbullied.  There was also a guy who talked about the effects of cyberbulling on a kid and how cyberbulling is actually worse than traditional bullying.  The reason, he said, is because with traditional bullying, it happens then its done with.  With cyberbulling, it stays with you, and follows you around and can happen anywhere.

While i do think that cyberbulling is a problem and must be stopped, i disagree with the man in the video's opinion.  With traditional bullying, its confrontational and sometimes violent.  With cyberbulling, i think, its easy to shut off your phone or devise and that's all.  I do understand that you must have a lot of self control not to look or respond to mean messages, but at least this is in your control, and you can ignore it.  Obviously all forms of bullying is unacceptable and there needs to be more rules in forced on this subject.
